About Janet McDonald

My Professional Background

I’m a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and hold two master’s degrees: one in Counselling Psychology (2019), and the other in Applied Psychological Science (2017), both from Memorial University. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts (honours) in Psychology (2015) from Memorial.

I’m a member in good standing with Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), The Academy of Naturopaths and Naturotherapists of Canada (ACNN), and The Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance (CADDRA).

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. – Viktor Frankl

My Therapeutic Approach

I use an integrative approach to therapy, which means I draw from several key theories and therapeutic techniques. My central approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It integrates mindfulness techniques with values exploration and self-directed, meaningful behaviour change. In addition to ACT, I draw strongly from Person-Centred Therapy, Positive Psychology, Self Compassion, Internal Family Systems, and Mindfulness.

My approach to therapy is collaborative; I work with people to navigate challenges related to adult ADHD, anxiety, stress, trauma, low self-worth, depression, and relationship challenges.

My primary goal is to create a safe, comfortable, non-judgmental environment where people feel respected, understood, and free to be themselves. People describe me as warm, caring, down-to-earth, and encouraging.
Together we’ll examine what’s going on in your life, and consider how you’d like things to be different. We may explore aspects of your past, illuminate blind spots, and clarify how you see yourself, your relationships, and your place in the world.

Challenges, heartaches, and personal struggles are a natural but painful part of life. If you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, and unsure, it may be a sign that you could benefit from some extra support and perspective. I can help you gain clarity, connect with your values, and access courage to change your life for the better.

When you say yes to others, make sure you are not saying no to yourself. – Paulo Coelho

My Personal Background

I have worked as an actor, journalist and program organizer. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre (Acting) from Dalhousie (1992), and a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Journalism from Ryerson (now Toronto Metropolitan University) (2000).

In my downtime I enjoy traveling, spending time in nature, meditating, reading, journaling, drawing, watching movies, going to theatre and concerts, playing with my dogs, and laughing with my husband, friends and family.
